Re: antioxidant therapy
HI Christina & Derek
I don't know any on on Antioxidant Therapy but maybe this will
help you. I also want to welcome you to our family here at Tpp.
Please fill free to post any question you my have.
Antioxidant Therapy
Antioxidants are substances that seem to have a protective effect in
the body. To best
understand the beneficial role these chemicals play, it is useful to
first describe the term
oxidation. This is the process by which cells use oxygen to perform
their normal function.
In so doing, highly charged chemicals called Oxidants, such
as "oxygen free radicals,"
are produced. These normal by products of metabolism can have a
deleterious effect on
the body

Antioxidant Therapy Antioxidants are substances that seem to have a
protective effect in the body. To best
understand the beneficial role these chemicals play, it is useful to
first describe the term
oxidation. This is the process by which cells use oxygen to perform
their normal function.
In so doing, highly charged chemicals called Oxidants, such
as "oxygen free radicals,"
are produced. These normal by products of metabolism can have a
deleterious effect on
the body. They may actually increase the risk for certain diseases,
such as cancer and
heart attacks. Antioxidants on the other hand, seem to have the
capacity to decrease the
build up of these highly charged chemicals, and thus seem to decrease
the liklihood of
both heart attacks and certain type of cancers in many epidemiologic
studies. For
individuals who may either have established coronary artery disease,
or who are at high
risk, serious consideration may be given to taking these antioxidants
on a regular basis.
There are several naturally occurring vitamins that can be obtained
in over the counter
preparations, for just such a purpose. If interested, we recommend:
1. Vitamin E
(preferably as d-Alpha Tocopherol) 400 IU one daily 2. Vitamin C
(preferably a
sustained release formula) 500mg one daily Please note that Beta
Carotene has also been
shown to have antioxidant properties. But because of a controversial
study, reported in
the fall of 1993, suggesting an adverse effect from the combination
of both Vitamin E
and beta carotene in smokers, we have decided against recommending
this agent at the
present time. The data suggests that Vitamin E seems to be the most
protective
antioxidant with regard to heart disease. In addition, per the Dec 15
article in Annals of
Internal Medicine, Vol 123, Numb 12, pp 950-951, consideration could
be made to add
Fish Oil supplements at two to three capsules per day (total 1.0g
each). This may actually
lower blood pressure and plasma lipid levels. In addition, there is
evidence to suggest an
antiplatelet effect that could decrease the stickiness and thus
decrease risk of a heart
attack. Also, there appears that an increase in homocysteine
associated with a deficiency
in folate can increase heart attacks. We recommend a multivitamin
such as Centrum or
Theragran with at least 400mcg of folate (folic acid). In some cases
we prescribe folate
1.0mg daily.
